HOUSEHOLDS will be wondering if they can claim tax relief if they've been forced to work from home during the snow. Two weeks ago we reported on Shell Energy taking over the Post Office’s broadband business. At the time Shell said climate activists and other concerned customers could leave penalty-free. Lots of Money readers tried to depart but were told that exit penalties would be payable. Shell has reconfirmed its stance, and said customer services staff have been reminded of this.
In April 2022, the government decided to only pay back workers who have to work from home. People who choose to continue working from home will no longer be able to claim working from home tax relief as they did during the pandemic. It’s also possible to claim the exact amount of extra costs if they are higher than £6 a week. In this case, evidence such as receipts, bills, or contracts is needed to prove that there is additional financial strain. For example, if you calculated your additional annual expenditure was £500, this would equate to a £100 repayment / relief for a basic rate taxpayer.

Even if you file for an extension, the clock will still be ticking on any required payments, and the penalties and interest can add up pretty quickly. If you fail to file on time, the IRS will come after you until you do. Worse yet, the tax agency can assess up to 25% just in late filing penalties.
